Startup Resources for Returning Citizens

Mission

The cycle of incarceration inflicts enormous financial, social & emotional costs on victims, families and communities. Every dollar that must be spent on corrections is a dollar that is no longer available for education. The good news is that many are beginning to realize our mistake, as a society. Our mission? Promoting entrepreneurship as a viable alternative to traditional employment opportunities for those reentering society from prison or jail, and working with our amazing partners to deliver startup skills.

Vision

If people returning home from prison pursued entrepreneurship, it would undoubtedly make a significant impact on innovation. If between one and seven percent of people leaving state or federal prison next year started their own businesses (i.e., the percentage of welfare-to-work participants who start businesses in addition to or instead of securing traditional employment), 6,500 to 45,000 new businesses would be created in the U.S. We strive to help returning citizens hone their startup skills and get ready for launch!

Over 735 per 100,000 people are incarcerated each year in the U.S. Most will eventually be released and one of their most important needs is securing a job, but legal and practical barriers routinely prevent them from accessing employment to earn a living wage and move out of or avoid poverty.

Entrepreneurship is a powerful answer to the problems that many face in today’s fast-paced and technologically-driven world, including those reentering society from prison or jail! Reentry Ventures is delivered to you by From the Block to the Boardroom and Open for Business Ventures who have partnered to motivate, inspire and help you transition smoothly while learning the concepts required to launch successful business ventures.
